COBLE
SAYS 6TH DISTRICT SCHOOLS TO GET FEDERAL FUNDS
(WASHINGTON,
D.C.)----School systems in Alamance and Guilford counties have been
selected to receive close to a million dollars each to foster smaller
learning environments within large public high schools, U.S. Rep.
Howard Coble (R-NC) announced today. Congressman Coble, who represents
portions of Alamance and Guilford in the U.S. House, said both public
school systems would receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education.
Rep.
Coble said both school systems will receive more than $800,000 each
over a three-year period commencing October 1. Alamance-Burlington
School System will receive $898,505 between now and September 30,
2007, according to Rep. Coble, while Guilford County Public Schools
will receive $842,720 during the same time frame. The U.S. Department
of Education said the funds will come from its Smaller Learning
Communities Program.
"I
have been informed that these funds will be used to promote academic
achievement through the planning, implementation or expansion of
small, safe and successful learning environments in our larger public
high schools," Rep. Coble said. "That is a worthy goal,
and I am delighted that schools in Alamance and Guilford have been
selected to participate in this federal program."
Federal
education officials say the money will be used for planning and
implementation grants. According to a document accompanying the
announcement, these funds will be used to "ensure that all
students who enter high school with reading/language arts and mathematics
skills that are significantly below grade level 'catch up' quickly
so that, by no later than the end of the 10th grade, they acquire
the...skills they need to participate successfully in rigorous academic
courses...to transition successfully to postsecondary education,
an apprenticeship or advanced training."
