Congressman
Coble to Kick Off Classes for Mature Learners
UNC-Greensboro
GREENSBORO
- Congressman Howard Coble will help the Emeritus Society begin
a new round of classes, ranging from “The Age of Innocence”
to local immigrants, at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at The University of North
Carolina at Greensboro.
Part
of the CALL initiative, the Emeritus Society is offering eight noncredit
classes to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of adults without
the pressure of tests and grades. These daytime classes begin in
late September and early October, and are designed with the substantial
life experience and other strengths of mature learners in mind.
Coble,
a Greensboro native serving his 10th term in the U.S. House of Representatives,
will make opening remarks at a reception in the Weatherspoon Auditorium.
Afterwards, attendees will have the opportunity to meet instructors
and fellow students over cookies and lemonade. The Weatherspoon
Art Museum is at the intersection of Tate and Spring Garden streets.
The courses
generally will meet for an hour and a half on campus or at other
locations in Greensboro. The courses and their instructors are:
o “Adventures in Anthropological Fieldwork,” Dr. Thomas
Fitzgerald;
o “Emerging & Re-Emerging Issues in the Biological Sciences,”
Dr. Robert Cannon;
o “History’s Heavyweights,” Dr. Stephen Ruzicka;
o “Leo Tolstoy, Great Short Works,” Dr. Joachim Baer;
o “New Immigrants in Our Community,” Dr. Raleigh Bailey;
o “President and Congress: Drama Without End,” Dr. David

o “Restless Probing Spirits: The Rise of Greek Philosophy
and the Birth of the Western Mind,” Dr. John Young;

o “Eat Your Words: ‘The Age of Innocence,’”
Dr. Hephzibah Roskelly (Class meets only once, Oct. 28); and
