Coble
announces more than $11 million in
federal funds for Greensboro Airport
U.S.
Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC), a member of House committee with oversight
of the nation’s airports, announced today that officials at
the U.S. Department of Transportation have confirmed that Piedmont
Triad International Airport will receive more than $11 million in
federal funds to construct a runway and taxiways and complete a
comprehensive noise study. Congressman Coble said that $10 million
will be used for runway construction and $1.3 million will support
the noise study.
“Our
airport is an economic engine for the entire region,” Rep.
Coble said. “We must continue to modernize and upgrade the
facilities and these funds will go a long way towards meeting that
goal. At the same time, we must be mindful of the impact of the
airport on those who live and work near the facility. These funds
will allow airport officials to comprehensively study the impact
airport noise has on the area and look for ways to alleviate that
noise.”
Congressman
Coble said the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority will receive $6
million in discretionary funds and $4 million in entitlement funds
from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the runway and taxiways
construction. Airport officials expect to let the first contracts
this summer and final construction could be as late as 2009. The
$1.3 million allocated for the noise study will be spent over the
next two-and-a-years with completion expected sometime in 2006.
