Coble says almost $11 million coming for airports in Guilford and Moore Counties
Airports in Guilford and Moore counties will receive almost $11 million in federal funds to build or improve runways and safety aprons according to an announcement made today by U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC). Congressman Coble said he has been officially notified by federal officials that the 6th District airports are slated to receive funds from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Rep. Coble announced that the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) will receive $8 million from the FAA to construct the new parallel runway that is needed for the planned FedEx cargo hub. The money comes from the legislation known as “Air-21” or the “Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century,” which Coble cosponsored. In addition, Congressman Coble said that PTIA will receive $1,672,000 to rehabilitate the airport’s South cargo apron which is more than 40 years old.
Rep. Coble also announced that Moore County Airport will receive $1 million from the FAA to improve its runway safety area. The FAA’s grant will be used to relocate NC Highway 22 and State Road 1843 so that the safety area can be brought up to current FAA design standards
“These airports in Guilford and Moore counties are vital economic engines for the entire region,” Rep. Coble stated, “so these awards are welcomed news. We need to make sure that these airports have the modernized runways and upgraded safety features that are needed to compete in the new aviation-driven economy. As a member of the Aviation subcommittee of the House’s Transportation and Infrastructure panel, I will continue to work with officials at PTIA and Moore County Airport to ensure that the federal government contributes its fair share to the costs of modernizing and upgrading our airports.”
